Artist Statement

I first tried woodturning when I was 13. Then after a 46 year hiatus, I tried it again. As addicted as I have become in just 6 years, it’s probably just as well I had that long break!

I’ve had a love affair with wood and woodworking all my life. At six, I can remember carving and sanding wooden swords until they were silky smooth. While in high school, I built a boat. In college and grad school, I did radial arm saw demonstrations and built 2 x 4 furniture out of necessity.

During my 33 year career as a Boeing engineer and manager, my woodworking was mostly focused on practical home projects. I promised myself that when I retired I’d get a “proper” set of tools, and explore the more “artistic” aspects of woodworking.

While acquiring those tools, at my wife’s urging I got a lathe. I wonder if she’s sorry now?

Soon, I discovered the various charms of wood turning. There is no end to the variety of techniques, projects, woods, and friendships to be found. I have discovered an endeavor to last a lifetime.

I am a member of the American Association of Woodturners, and am the President of the Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the AAW.

I hope you’ll come to Verksted so you can look at my woodturning projects and pick them up. Touching the pieces is the only way to enjoy the textural sensuality of the turned wood surface.
