Artist Statement:
I’ve
pursued photography as a hobby for most of my life – beginning when my
Dad (a baby photographer at the time) showed me how to develop pictures
in his darkroom.
My professional career has included working as a disc-jockey… radio
interviewer… TV producer-director… scriptwriter and, most recently – as
a college instructor. Projects have included traveling with a TV
documentary crew to southeast Asia… writing and producing comedy radio
spots on saving energy… interviews with bandleader Count Basie, and
most recently Carol Serling – widow of noted TV writer Rod Serling
(“Twilight Zone”). Serling’s work has been, and continues to be an
important research interest.
My recent retirement from the faculty at Ithaca College has provided
the time to apply what I’ve learned about communication over the years
through photography. I feel that producing a fine, creative still image
involves selecting a worthy subject, then placing the camera in the
correct location and choosing the right lens to capture the image at
just the right moment. But my work also tends to explore the subtleties
of light and shadow… environmental elements (fog, haze, etc.)… unique
camera angles and composition, as well as the creative potential of
black and white imagery. These attributes help achieve the goal of all
communication – to “tell a story.”
Moving to the Pacific Northwest from upstate New York has provided me
with a whole new world of beautiful subjects to photograph. I’m
currently living on Bainbridge Island with my wife Cathy, and we’re
having fun discovering gorgeous, new vistas in this area every day. |
