Artist Statement:
My current craft, that of painting cats,
owls, and raccoons on rocks, allows me to keep doing the highly
detailed work I have always loved. Also, their rounded bodies,
unique eyes, and elusive beauty seem very much at home on the
beautiful, light-colored, surf-buffed stones and driftwood I find on
the beaches of my Pacific Northwest. Not every stone works, but,
once I decide there is an animal inside a stone, I make a careful
drawing and start building up the many layers of its eyes (a process
I developed) and nose or beak. I paint with transparent watercolors
so that I don’t obliterate the beauty of the stone. Acrylic spray
finishes the painting, making a durable surface. I use elk leather
for pedestals and padding wherever the stone might come into contact
with a table or wall.
I also create
large mosaic pictures, using vitreous glass and smalti tiles.
Retirement gave me
the opportunity to concentrate on fine art, after a long
professional career as a technical, medical, environmental
illustrator. My former work, cited under my name, appears in more
than 400 publications, books, maps, journal articles, displays, and
graphic presentations of all kinds. My former clients were located
at five universities (including the University of Washington),
Mountain Press Publishing Co., Phillips Petroleum Co., The National
Park Service, USDA, EPA, Migratory Water Fowl, etc.
Favorite Quote:
I like to tell people viewing my current work, “When I retired I
decided I never wanted to draw a liver again, or a mountain range, or the
dorsal fin of an arctic char!”
